London's best review, food and drink news
Its one-piece plastic chairs and weathered Formica tables might seem cute as kittens to lovers of retro kitsch, but theres nothing ironic about Something Fishy. Despite the punny name, this is as earnest an eaterie as you could hope for something that is reflected in the list of comforting if coronary-inducing mains (battered saveloys, hearty pies with generous helpings of buttery mash) and similarly traditional puds (jam roly-poly, knickerbocker glory). Its cod and chips, however, that keeps the place packed with everyone from leathery traders lunch-breaking from the nearby market to fresh-faced families and nostalgic old couples. Fish is wonderfully flaky and coated with crisp batter, while fluffy chips are served in portions big enough to satisfy even the most famished south Londoner. This isnt a place for a romantic lunch for two, nor are staff the type to waste time on pleasantries, but as a restaurant founded on tradition, it remains safely at the top of its game.
