  • Satay House

    Budget choice
  • Satay House attracts a happy mix of expats, locals and fans of Malaysian food, who clearly make a special journey. We arrived at 7.30pm on a Thursday to find the ground floor full and just a few tables left in the cosy yet sleekly designed basement. There was a hold-up in the kitchen; we waited well over half an hour for our starters. Still, the standard of cooking rewards patience. Buttery squares of roti canai came with chunky dalca (lentil and vegetable curry). The satay were imbued with a lovely lemongrass scent, but slightly tough chicken indicated they’d been grilled too long. No complaints about the luscious begedil (spiced lamb and potato cutlets) however – or the generous, juicy pineapple curry. The nutty scent of curry leaves wafted from a plate of tender sotong berempah (stir-fried squid with peppers). Satay House’s list of soft drinks (rose syrup and lime, watermelon juice, Milo) is fun; beer lovers can choose from four eastern lagers. Banana fritters – meltingly tender fruit inside, crisp without – came with maple syrup and devilishly good chocolate ice-cream. Another bonus: the bill was under £50 for two.

Not sure when all the other reviews were made, but i went to Satay house last week after not eaten there for 5 years. The food was awful. Having been to other Malaysian/singaporean restaurants, I am not just being fussy about authentic Asian food, but every single dish we ordered was far too sweet to start with. The 'ayam masak merah' was nothing like its original dish - it was more like sweet and sour chicken instead(more sweet than sour). We were so dissapointed that we complained to the waitress, asking her to convey this to the chef. God knows whether she did or not as the chef never showed up. That is our last trip to satay house - the bill came up to about 14 per head which was a right rip-off, as we couldnt even finish our food. It has certainly gone downhill despite the fancy new interior.

Quite disappointing to be honest- nothing made an impression and considering the higher-than-average prices I would much rather spend less and eat better at places like C & R, Kiasu and New Fook Lam Moon.
    Will not be going back.
