  • Presumably to compensate for the absence of windows in its basement dining room, Saki has an expansive centrepiece of white stalagmite-like candles rising up from a sea of white gravel. Striking, if a little pointless. The food is also striking, but definitely purposeful. Having received a restrained thumbs-up from us when it opened in spring 2006, Saki seems to have sharpened its culinary skills in 2007 this may have something to do with acquiring an ex-head chef of Nobu to helm its adventurous kitchen. The high quality of ingredients is exemplified by the lobster used in the first dish of our yanagi course, and the king crab sashimi that was recommended by our charmingly attentive waiter. Both crustacea were ultra-fresh and visually impressive and, most importantly, not overcooked. First-time visitors would do well to build an extra 20 minutes into their estimated dining time, as the length and interest of the monthly changing food menu is surpassed only by the marathon read that is the drinks list: an emphasis reflected in the adjoining, music-filled bar. And perhaps another ten minutes to explore the high-tech loos. Great food, thoroughly drilled service and never a dull moment.

This is by far the best Japanese restaurant in London and I highly recommend it to anyone who likes gastronomy. We've been dining here for last two years, but every time they surprise us. In addition to their melt-in-mouth sushi and sizzling udon, we tried out of curiosity their new 6 course menu called Shojin Kaiseki, and couldn't believe what we were eating was all strictly vegetarian! Vegan sushi beautifully presented and the main dish disguising the griled eel (one of my favourite) but made of lotus root dumpling. The course came with a sake cocktail aperitif, which is another highlight of this place - I love their bar, too: a perefct hideaway after work to enjoy nice conversation with a glass of wine and sushi. I can't wait to come back.
