The star of Abbeville Road’s hamlet of eateries, Newtons has delivered Modern European dishes interspersed with the odd Asian classic to the Clapham crowd for more than a decade. The dingin room’s exposed white brickwork, French-bistro chairs, crisp white tablecloths and glossy Indian photographs produce an uncluttered yet cosy feel, and the outdoor terrace is a prime spot for people-watching in summer. On our most recent visit, steamed aubergine, though slightly overcooked, had a chilli kick to contrast with some crunchy calamares served with an ectoplasmically green parsley sauce. The creamy chicken liver parfait with sour red onion marmalade was another commendable starter. We went à la carte, though the specials menu with two dinner courses for £15 (or three for £18.50; and cheaper at lunch) offer good value. The bacon and cheese burgers with skinny chips and an array of relishes were also tempting. Top-quality tuna steak arrived with a tart ratatouille sauce and crisp courgette fritters, while comforting lamb casserole provided melt-in-the-mouth meat with mint mash and a splendid mix of warming vegetables. A trio of own-made coconut, passion-fruit and green apple sorbets ended the meal on a light and flavoursome note.
