Looking out over Borough Market, Roast consists of a comfortable bar area giving way to a handsome, high-ceilinged restaurant with views of St Paul’s and the railway line through huge windows. If it’s a really sunny day, the room gets a bit too hot to handle, but most of the time it’s a boon to have so much natural light. The place never stops: it’s open for breakfast (smoked bacon and fried egg butty) and tea (coronation chicken sandwiches) as well as lunch and dinner, plus there’s now a takeaway outlet at the ground-floor entrance. We like the attention to detail: for example, there’s just as much emphasis on specialist teas as on cocktails, and there’s a roll call of British suppliers on the menu. But our meal lacked oomph. From herring roes on toast to grilled barnsley chop with peas, broad beans and lovage cream, it was all a little bland. Even a splendid-looking roast rump of rare beef with girolles and onion sauce was merely average, with neither texture nor taste standing out. Service started slowly, and only snapped to when the charming maître d’ came on the scene. A good restaurant that’s currently underperforming.

Hi and thanks for stopping by and taking the time to read my ad. So why am i on here? Well, ive recently moved down to london for work and would...
I firstI tried to make a reservation through Toptable since they were advertising a special (2 courses plus cocktail for 22 pounds), but since the maximum booking for this deal via Toptable was 4 people (however there was a note on the website saying you could bring up to 10 people using this offer), I called the restaurant directly and asked if I could book 10 people to on this deal for a farewell lunch. The woman said yes and I forwarded my credit card details. When we got to the restaurant they claimed only 4 of us could have the special and the rest had to pay full price. 2 out of the 3 sirloin steaks that were ordered rare were well-done, ridiculous seeing as they cost 25 pounds! The service was terrible. A friendly but highly untrained waitress didnt know who had ordered what and brought us the wrong wine and gave a fuzz when we wanted to send it back. Our tomato soups tasted like Campbells. The 'free' cocktail tasted terrible (champagne and whisky and pear juice). This is a highly overpriced restaurant not worth the money. There are certainly better places in London to have roasts and steaks. I dont know how Roast ever got its reputation. It might be ok for people on expense accounts but if paying out of your own pocket definately not worth it for what you get.
