The two London Rivingtons could be called the mid-market arm of the very smart Caprice Holdings group (Le Caprice, The Ivy, J Sheekey), although prices still aren’t cheap. The dining space at the original is calm and white, with crisp linen and enough of both formality and trendiness to gratify different audiences. Contemporary art such as a Tracey Emin light sculpture add a splash of Shoreditch cool.

Menus follow the distinctively British style set by Mark Hix, chef-supremo of Caprice group when the Rivington opened, using fresh, seasonal British ingredients from sustainable sources. The wine list offers an excellent choice by the glass or carafe. Which is all to the good, but the cooking for our Sunday lunch was pleasant without offering any kind of zip. Queenie scallops with garlic butter had mellow flavour, but hadn’t been cleaned properly; strathdon blue cheese and chicory salad, and Sunday roast rib of beef and yorkshire pud were decent yet anonymous.

Fish and chips was somewhat better than you get in most gastropubs, though at twice the price. Since the Rivington opens early, there’s also a big choice of breakfast and brunch-style dishes. Perhaps these are what to go for.

Great food and service but our meal was somewhat ruined by the apparent drunken resident guffawing estate agents propping up the bar.  It's a shame that such a nice venue is not separated from the bar or the local regular 'chaps' refused anymore to drink as learing antagonistic drunks don't quite go down well with ones guests. Shame.

Fantastic breakfast here! The duck eggs were amazing. Love the food and the interior is terrific too.

Having visited most of the restaurants in the Caprice Group I had never been to the Rivington Gill until last week. Little did I know what I had been missing out on. The service was very friendly and professional. Although it was a busy Friday evening, we were not rushed in any way. There was a lively ambience. The food was delicious. I had the whole Angelsea sea bass which was cooked to perfection and wonderfully succulent. My friend had a delicious minute steak with chips and French beans. The portions are generous - My side salad was a reasonable size and so different from the green salad at Brasserie Zedel which consisted of just 2 lettuce leaves! The honeycomb ice cream with toffee sauce is divine.

We thoroughly enjoyed our recent visit to the Rivington. We were there for a family celebration and it turned out to be a great choice as the surroundings, service and quality of food suited the occasion perfectly. I went for the Sea bass, which was fresh and succulent, cooked with lemon and fresh herbs and had a well-seasoned, crispy skin… our waiter recommended a white wine to go with it, which was delicious. The fish and chips was a popular choice on our table, again the fish was beautifully cooked and people commented on the crunchy batter and the outrageous chips! The service was attentive and thoughtful throughout, but not overbearing. The restaurant itself is open, elegantly decorated and has a lovely atmosphere…. I will definitely be going back and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to my friends.

Wonderful dinner. Service was excellent as always. I had the wonderfully cooked Newlyn Cod (my waiter tells me this fish is now sustainable) and the lady had the Lamb. Going to come back for the Haggis, it looked sensational! Great atmosphere. Loved it.

It's really sad because we used to absolutely love this place for it's great service and food but we've had three recent terrible experiences. When they were out of two items on the menu (spinach and smoked salmon and we ordered smoked salmon and scrambled egges and eggs Florentine), note they were also out of smoked salmon the last time we came a few weeks ago. This time we asked the waiter to ask the kitchen if they could make us an omelet instead of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, the kitchen said they don't make omelets. I'm sorry but what kitchen can't make an omelet?! Also the once amazing fresh bread was frozen and very tough. I never write reviews on these sites, but we felt this time was outstandly bad and worth a review in the hopes that they will change! Please Rivington, go back to being one of our favs.

We really like this unpretentious bohemian style restaurant and have been eating here once a year on holiday trips last four years. Sadly it didnt deliver on our latest visit. The staff, though friendly and informal seems a bit whimsical in approach. Two ginmartinis ordered, two mojitos delivered - is just an example. Oysters were excellent, cornish crab average, but the strongly recommended steaks were a true and utter disaster: extremely tough and obviously wrongly butchered. The attempt they did to make it right produced two lumps of steak marginally more tender but covered in foul tasting oil as though they were deep fried (old trick?). No good tastes there at all. We were really surprised.... Two stars for staff who seemed sincerely sorry for this. Shape up!
