Rosa’s is located in the heart of trendy Spitalfields, and so often packed. The cool basement has proper seats, not the red stools of the rather dark ground floor. Service was fast and friendly, and the menu enticing.
Deep-fried crispy squid with plum sauce was just right, and poo nim (‘deep-fried soft-shell crab topped with Thai herbs’) suitably tasty. But the ‘Thai herb’ was a strange scattering of chopped salad completely shrouding the crab, and containing hidden chunks of fierce dried chilli. The signature grills – pla yang (sea bass) and gaeh yang (rack of lamb) – were both perfectly cooked and came with chilli sauce and ‘cooled steamed vegetables’. Given such spicy dishes, it was a joy to find among the latter chunks of perfectly cooked cauliflower.
