There are more than 120 dishes on the menu at this small, friendly Chinese-Malay restaurant, so perhaps it’s not surprising that the cooking can be slightly patchy. Beef satay had a fine and appetising flavour but the accompanying peanut sauce was too sweet and sticky. A generous portion of sambol prawns in a sweet chilli sauce went down well, as did sayur lemak (spinach in coconut sauce). Our favourite dish was shien ba: tender aromatic pork in soy sauce gravy, but the pa tai mee (stir-fried noodles) was distinctly dull. Nonetheless, banana fritters with ice-cream and golden syrup rounded off the meal nicely. A homely and hospitable eaterie, Satay Malaysia makes for a relaxed venue offering good-value grub.

We live in Crouch End too and we simply love this restaurant! It is a famliy run business with a warm atmosphere and where children are more than welcome. The food is great and good value for money. I can recommend this place to everyone who is looking for a nice evening out.

Subterraneo

The food ranges from above average quality to near-perfect, the staff are friendly but not intrusive, the portions are generous, the value-for-money is good, and the place feels comfortable wherever you sit regardless of the number of diners. It's neither pretentious nor upmarket, which maybe why Time Out only gave it two stars, but for those who prefer an uncomplicated night out, this place is a godsend.
