Having been in East London for 10 years and watched restaurants pop up this one has got it spot on. It's minimalist british grub using the best ingredients and presented with elegance.

‘Shane’ is Kiwi chef Shane Harrison, who set up this very local restaurant in early 2012 on Chatsworth Road, an up-and-coming high street in up-and-coming Clapton. It’s a lo-fi-looking operation, with lampshades made of pegs, quirky animal sketches on the walls and packed-in tables. These are filled with gentrifying Hackneyites who were sure somewhere like this was going to open soon.
Much is made on the website of the all-British sourcing policy, which could include herbs from Hackney Marshes just up the road. Dishes make the most of seasonal game and seafood: venison carpaccio with pickled carrots; rabbit and wood-pigeon pâté; hake with sea beet, chorizo and clams. More simple options include a perfectly cooked onglet steak with béarnaise, or mussels with nettles (again, picked nearby).
The skill in the kitchen is evident, although prices can be steep – £2 for a slice of bread and butter is mean, even if the loaf is own-made. The wine list isn’t great value either. Our only other grumble is that service failed to cope when the room was full; but overall, this cute little place is a sign that Clapton’s early adopters were on to something.

Amazing flavors, would most definitely be coming here again. Friendly atmosphere, great for parties! 5 stars from me.
Great menu options. I loved my creamy rabbit and leek starter, but could have tried them all. The pork neck was excellent - and huge! Could have used some more chutney with it to up the flavour and combat the dryness of a huge chunk of meat. The sticky toffee pudding was delicious but again needed more wetness, syrupiness and sauce. A little bit more contrast in the flavours, and a little bit more sauce, and this would be five stars. Prices are standard for this kind of place, ie £15 for a main. Excellent and friendly service. I was also intrigued by the jars of apple sauce sitting on the side, looking like caramel.
Shane's was a fantastic find! I was taken here for my birthday by my boyfriend when it first opened and it was exceptional. The intimate & cosy space was filled with a brilliant atmosphere, great music and lovely, knowledgable staff. The food was perfectly cooked, wonderful to look at & I loved the combination of elements on the plate. I am so excited to be returning this Saturday! I have recommended to loads of friends and many of them have visited themselves and had the same experience! oh.. and a wine list that is great value for money, the 2009 Bordeaux is a beauty!! It has been great to find somewhere that you can eat so well, with fresh seasonal ingredients at such a good price!
Shane's was lovely, the decor is quite minimalist and the restaurant is very small, there are only about 5 tables. The food was very tasty, it was difficult choosing! I had rabbit pâté to start which was lovely and a goat's cheese and leek pie for main. The crust on the pie was perfection but came on a separate plate to my mash and red cabbage which was a little awkward on a small table. We finished with a chessboard which I was quite disappointed with. The cheese selection isn't fantastic and the portion's are very small, I'm used to Gordon's on embankment so I think i've been quite spoilt. If i am in the area again i would definitely go back.
Always a great sign when you can't decide what to have - I could have happily had four starters for dinner alone... The first time I've ever had woodpigeon and I'd certainly have it again if Shane's cooking. A tasty barnsley chop with heavenly cauliflower puree followed, though I did look enviously at my friend's pig cheek with lentils or another friend's onglet steak with perfect french fries (I nicked one or two). Lovely room, intimate atmosphere... will be bringing my boyfriend over to try the tapas.
Shanes was a great choice for a casual supper a few weeks ago, I’d heard great things about the fresh seafood being delivered from Cornwall and it completely failed to disappoint. The smoked mackerel starter was incredible; moist, flaky fish with a delicious seasonal coleslaw. Sadly the mains menu was mostly sold out but the wood pigeon was recommended as an underappreciated gem by the very friendly staff. We trusted them and were rewarded with a perfectly cooked, tender bird that even surpassed the waiter’s description. All in all this cosy little bistro deserves all the praise it’s received so far. I do hope they consider opening one south of the river.
Had a late dinner here recently with some friends who were visiting. Wanted to take them somewhere special in Clapton and had read all the good reviews. It was a pretty warm evening and the restaurant was absolutely boiling - the heat inside was stifling but all the outside seats were taken so we went with it anyway. Staff were lovely but the service was not great. The steaks that arrived were delicious but almost cold, portions were tiny, a lot of dishes were sold out, the two salad tapas I had were pretty bland and the biscuits on the cheese board were soft and stale. some of the food was good but all in all it was a very expensive meal and the quality served up and the service itself weren't up to scratch. I've moved to the area recently and while it is great to see all these lovely cafes and restaurants appearing, it is very frustrating that prices are all top-end while a lot of the time they aren't quite there with the service and product they offer.
What a great little restaurant. An unpretentious, cosy, kooky little place hidden away in Hackney with super friendly staff and amazing food. The ham croquettes are a must.... as is the chocolate pot desert. Also, great value for money. For less than £60, my boyfriend and I dined on three courses each and also we could bring our own booze! I will definitely return to this little gem of a restaurant. I've already recommended it to all of my friends.
The Specials board for lunch is what caught my eye with – Home marinated sardines, potted smoked mullet with roe butter, salt beef croquettes (best I've tasted). My partner and I had a window seat where we could watch the market and enjoyed a great bottle of organic sauvignon from New Zealand. I then had a main from the dinner of Berkshire roe deer with baby beetroot which was so tender and my partner had the wild mushroom risotto that was well portioned and tasty. Definitely coming back for dinner and bringing some foodie friends.
Great find! love the food here, had a delicious dinner and came back the next weekend for lunch! there is such a lovely local and friendly atmosphere as well in this lovely little restaurant, can't recommend it highly enough.
Really liked my brunch here. Food was spot-on, everyone was very friendly, and am immediately trying to get friends diaries synchronised for our next visit!
Having been to eat at Shane's twice now I can safely say the quality is outstanding and great value. Their early bird offer gives you 15%off your bill before 6pm but the menu is still fairly priced. The restaurant offers an intimate yet relaxed and friendly environment with work form local artist exhibited. The staff are welcoming and know their menu/produce inside out. One of the best dining experiences to be had! Especially recommend the salt beef croquette and broad bean gnocchi starters.
Have been twice since the opening and being a local we are over the moon that such good quality food is now available on our doorstep! Keep up the good work Shane!!
Popped in on a whim, was pretty tasty and ended up having the three full courses. The Lemon Polenta cake is amazing!!!!!
