There are several restaurants of note around the Vietnamese hotspot on Kingsland Road, but the stalwart Song Que, found slightly away from the pack up towards Haggerston, is somewhere that stands out over repeat visits. The corner site with its large windows and effortless decor doesn’t do much to excite the senses as you wait for a table (as is inevitable if you haven’t booked), and it’s true that the attitude of the hustling staff is more functional than friendly. But the food is good enough to overlook hospitality shortcomings, and prices haven’t risen disproportionately with popularity.
The menu is a formidably extensive list of dishes from the north and south of Vietnam, as is common in most such restaurants. You could visit every day for a year and eat a different dish, but classics are brilliantly executed. The beef pho – warming, subtly spiced, generous with the meat – is one of the best bowlfuls in London, while the likes of chargrilled quail; fragrant ground beef in betel leaf; fried and fresh rolls; bun cha (grilled pork mince with noodles); and fruity, chilli-laden salads are consistently superb.
