It may not look like much from the outside, but that hasn’t stopped locals from cottoning on to just how good Sushi-Say is – the place is rarely empty.
Following a warm welcome from the sushi chef, you’re ushered into the long, simply adorned dining room. The no-nonsense matron is happy to talk you through the menu, which offers plenty of variety including the usual tempura, teriyaki and noodle dishes: all done to a high standard.
A mound of cold zaru soba noodles with a subtle soy-based dipping sauce proved perfect for a summer’s day. Many opt for thickly sliced and perfectly fresh sashimi, or sushi. Surf clam nigiri was sweet and meaty with just a little resistance, while a salmon-skin maki was rich and earthy, if not as crisp as we’d expected.
Don’t be surprised by the absence of wasabi on the side of your rolls: the chef has already added it, and is confident he’s used the right amount. If you decide to join the ranks of the regulars, you can accompany a meal with your own bottle of saké kept behind the bar.
