Every year we feature this Punjabi grill, and every year it seems to be bigger and busier – as of 2012, the cellar and first floor of the former pub have been renovated and pressed into service to accommodate the endless stream of diners. Booking is essential, and we recommend an early evening or lunchtime visit, unless you’re prepared to queue amid the crowds.
So why the limitless popularity? Put simply, Tayyabs serves some of the best and cheapest Indian food in London, with a no-charge BYO policy to sweeten the deal. To start: juicy seekh kebabs, loaded with cracked coriander seeds and chilli; pakora dipped in yoghurt sauce; sizzling chicken tikka; and the dish that it’s almost compulsory to order – hot, charred, gingery grilled lamb chops. For mains, full-flavoured curries (try the tomatoey chana masala, or the slow-cooked ‘dry lamb’), often authentically dripping with ghee and unapologetically spicy, accompanied by tandoor-fresh breads. You’ll struggle to spend £20 a head.
We’ve heard reports of customers with bookings waiting ages for tables, service can be perfunctory, and there are often mere seconds between your last mouthful and the appearance of the bill. Nevertheless: an unmissable London dining experience.
