This is probably the only café in London with a door policy: an adult must be accompanied by a child to enter. The aim is to create a home-from-home atmosphere for local families. A giant doll’s house, groaning book shelves, floor cushions and an extensive dressing-up wardrobe means children can play while parents snatch a chat over coffee in this light and pleasant space. Owners (local mums Sam and Ginny) and their staff are chatty with children and friendly to their carers; regulars get Monopoly money to spend as cash on their next visit. They’ve thought of everything: toddler portions, bibs, bottle warmers, purées and a help-yourself cold water urn with tap.

The menu features freshly cooked, healthy ingredients, and dish quality has improved since our last visit – beetroot and feta salad was excellent. Kids get several pasta options (own-made pesto, tomato and basil, bolognese), bangers and mash, a burger and so on. Service can be a bit haphazard (they completely forgot our child’s meal), but the all-round generosity of spirit makes up for it.
