The Diner

Kensal Rise
With its brand of crowd-pleasing American nourishment and family-friendly venues, the Diner has quietly branched out into five locations across town, one of the latest and largest occupying a prime spot on Kensal Rise’s Chamberlayne Road. Our spring bank holiday visit saw groups of hungover locals and young families soaking up the sunshine on the sizeable front terrace and in the back garden. Inside, the decor, unsurprisingly, takes a cue from the restaurant’s name: all spring-loaded napkin dispensers, vintage lamps and red banquettes. Don’t expect to order in a hurry: there’s a dizzying list of breakfasts, sandwiches, burgers, Mexican dishes and ‘blue plate specials’ to get through. We tested the American credentials with a shrimp po’ boy, and this New Orleans staple translated well: deep-fried prawns in spicy mayo encased in a soft baguette. Western eggs came scrambled with a mix of peppers, cheese and bacon next to a portion of cubed home fries. Milkshakes are the stuff of teen B-movie dreams, served both in a glass and the ice-cold steel mixing-cup for extra top-ups. Over-18s refreshments include an impressive selection of American craft beers and booze-spiked ‘hard shakes’.

Ben

This was a brilliant restaurant but unfortunately it has now closed down due to very few customers.

Gus the Cat

The Diner is slipping a bit. Slow service, no kids menus. Not a good time to drop standards with a newer, classier rival opening opposite.
