Some people have wardrobes that are larger than the Espresso Room. A dozen people would make the place feel crowded. ER has been wowing customers since opening in 2010. It’s completely focused on coffee, made in a lovingly cared-for Marzocco machine.
Beans are from Square Mile and Has Bean, with Square Mile providing the espresso (Red Brick) when we visited. This is a powerful blend, but there is sweetness in there too, carefully preserved in brewing. Had the crema not been just a little bit thin, it would have been a perfect cup.
Food is minimal: one sandwich, a soup of the day (Moroccan chicken on our visit), baked sweet things. The famous children’s hospital is just across the road, and academics from nearby university campuses also feature among the clientele. Service is from a pair of baristas who display warmth and friendliness in addition to technical skills. ER proves that small is indeed beautiful.
