Owned by the team behind Smiths of Smithfield, this multistorey venue (in part of the original Spitalfields Market) has many of the same attributes. On the ground floor, come the evening, food is confined to snacks and a corner of the lively, but not overbearingly noisy, ground-floor bar. On our visit, a hen party was taking advantage of the half-price cocktails.

Head to the first floor for a more relaxed meal, in a stunningly attractive room with a view of the market through half-moon windows. Prices are full-on, though excellent (free) bread ensures good first impressions. The wood-fired oven and grill is the thing. A spherical burger, deliciously charred and the size of a cricket ball, was a winner (though it comes without chips – they’re another £3.50).

Less of a thrill was to be had from mussels in an oddly thin cider and stilton juice. Thai beef salad was refreshing, but lacked kick, and a well-balanced salad of top-class mozzarella and beets had damp leaves. The dish that left us feeling really shortchanged, however, was a Malaysian pumpkin curry that contained mere slivers of the veg.

A final disappointment was the chocolate tasting plate: two variations on mousse and generally not enough impact. Hovering staff had more of a hipster vibe than the customers. Topping and tailing the venue are a basement music bar and a private dining room on the top floor.

Don't bother with this place, overpriced dreadful food served by staff who can't be bothered to make an effort. Had breakfast there yesterday, it wasn't busy but still they managed to leave our coffee's standing on the bar for ten minutes before bringing them over, after a massive delay, food came out in bits; pancakes and bacon should be served together, not pancakes followed by some old just warm bacon. And to automatically add the gratuity - the staff don't even have to work for tips anymore! Avoid!

Simply dreadful service, slow and unapologetic mixed with a general feeling of apathy that reeks through the entire establishment. Being told that service was compulsory after waiting 35 minutes for a sandwich delivered felt like a slap in the face compounded by hugely disappointing food. With a menu consisting of pub grub you wouldn't feed to a pub mutt and service as hostile as a siege I can't emphasise how much you should try and avoid this place.

We went there for lunch on a HOT weekday afternoon, hoping for a decent meal. Staff was more interested standing behind the bar chatting than serving. When the food came, the famous Luxe burger was overcooked (shame the meat was good), the brioche bun was dry. The steak in the steak sandwich was also over cooked. I don't know why the food was so bad, it wasn't busy! Didn't bother complaining, paid and walked out feeling ripped off. I hope they sort it out.

Had a great time! Went for lunch on a Saturday and it was buzzing. My boyfriend and I had the polenta and goats cheese salad and the big breakfast - both were delicious! Staff were great, no complaints at all.

Service was fine on a bank holiday monday, nothing exemplary but unobtrusive. The food, however, was rather poor. The potatoes used for the chips that came with the burger (the sole non-salad vegetarian option) tasted stale. The sausage and mash was two rather bland pork sausages, some lumpy mash and congealed gravy. It felt like an instant meal prepared by somebody who can't measure water correctly. Oh, and we weren't asked how the meal was.

Emailed the Luxe about hiring an area for a corporate event, where we would be spending over £2500. Work for a well-known city firm that area local to the area and so could use Luxe frequently. I was told to 'GO SOMEPLACE ELSE'. Great customer service! Their loss.

Food is cold every time and the staff absolutely unapologetic verging on aggressive. I used to eat here weekly but they have really gone downhill.

I ordered the sunday roast, the beef was too rare and they forgot to add the yorkshire pudding. Also ordered eggs benedict, the dish was luke warm to cold.
