This popular neighbourhood chippy always seems to have a queue of locals waiting for its freshly battered fish and thick-cut chips. A partition conceals the takeaway punters from a small dining room, where dated seaside decor meets canteen crockery and a pleasantly nostalgic menu.
There's prawn cocktail to start and school dinner-style puddings, such as jam sponge slathered in electric-yellow custard, to finish. For mains, fish and chips is the real deal. Light, crispy batter envelops fresh, flaky cod (you can also have haddock, plaice, lemon sole or halibut), while the chips are refreshingly free of finger-drenching oil. The tartare sauce might be a little thin and overly sharp, and the side salad reliant on uninspiring iceberg, but Mr Fish is a consistently reliable quick-stop venue worth discovering.
