As Spitalfields Market continues to bustle and change around it, Square Pie remains a bastion of all things pie and mash. The sleek, red-tiled counter provides tasty pies, mash and mushy peas to shoppers and local workers, who sit and devour their cardboard boxes of hearty goodness at either the bar stools inside or the tables outside in the market itself.
The menu ranges from trad options (steak and Guinness, chicken and mushroom) to the more adventurous (jerk chicken), all coming with mounds of soft mash. Smaller pies, Devon-made pasties and veggie options are available, as well as non-pie dishes, such as beef stew, jacket potatoes, macaroni cheese and sausages. If you can fit in anything afterwards, there are lamingtons, carrot cake, victoria sponge and apple pie, and coffees from Monmouth. All in all, great filling grub at a persuasive price.
