There's a childish sense of fun about a restaurant that allows you to eat the tablecloth that the food is served on: the injera pancake upon which Eritrean cooks set out their wares becomes hearty stuff once the sauces have got into the grain, and a pleasure to tuck into. Proprietor Tsige Haile is a heroine back home - she wrote the first Eritrean cookbooks - and her restaurant bridges the gap between eaterie and chill-out room with its painted tables and zebra rugs. Our falafel starter seemed strangely meagre, and main courses mingle together, so make sure you choose contrasting stews; zigni derho is fiery, with a jerk chicken edge, while alicha lamb is mellowed by lentils. The weekend buffet offers the best of all worlds.

I visited this place on the weekend with friend and we loved the food, YUM YUM.the place.deco WOW and the service.SMILY and ON TIME.what a change
it has become one of my best place to go know,i'm going back for more for my b-day.
The food is very tasty although service slow and meandering. However, it is worth going when you aren't starving to enjoy a few drinks whilst eating at leisure.
visited on a weeknight and when we arrived restaurant was empty, were about to leave when staff eventually appear. Apart from that lovely meal - my friend and I are both vegetarian and ended up getting a sharing platter. The food was really tasty and we both said we would go back.
I went to this restaurant last night and was really impressed. The food was of a high quality and very tasty. I'd not eaten this type of cuisine before but I'm going back for more. It's a tad pricey but I think a real hidden gem and well worth a visit.
Meagre indeed and, with the starters approaching £4, followed by mains, at around £9, I seriously wonder if 'strangely meagre', as described by the last reviewer, should read, 'A case for The Office of Fair Trading'. Although the rice arrived far too late, if only the food had been as good as the service the waitress provided, (Wednesday 16th of March, 2011), 'overheard a female customer navigating the humiliation of having to ask for toilet paper. At these prices, no thank you.
Our experiences echoed those of my fellow patron CM Thomas, which suggests that this restaurant has some inherent issues that have simply not been addressed. Our starters, which essentially consisted of a feta salads. pitta and hommus, took around 50 minutes to come. Once the mains arrived, some 1h15 mins later, we were intrigued to see the food was served off a giant pancake. However the waitress ignored our requests to keep the meat and fish dishes seperate which resulted one member of our party being unable to enjoy most of the dishes. The final insult was to be told that the card machine was broken despite a complete lack of prior warning. Judging by the review below, it hasn't worked for over 5 months! What frustrates most however is that shoddy service aside, the uniqueness and flavour of the dishes could have make this a real find. Unfortunately there are simply far too many basic flaws to merit a recommendation.
We had booked a table for a party of seven. When we arrive no one had a clue about the booking. We was seated without any problems, but we had to wait for over twenty minutes before we was given a drinks menu. After the wait the waiter brought the menus only to then have to another 20 minutes for ours drinks to be given to us. Only to wait another hour and a half for the food to arrive. We won't have minded the wait If the place was full, but it wasn't. When it came to leaving to pay the bill we thought it would be best to go to the till to pay only to find out the card reader didn't work. Myself and my friend will not be returning back to this place.
This is a hidden gem.
Amidst many good options in NE London,
Zigni is the finest example of
Eritrean / Ethiopian food i've sampled here.
Highly recommend the Combo special: a range of
finely flavoured dishes, including melt in your mouth chicken - each one is a treat.
Under new management - i went there a year ago and was fairly unimpressed, the new people clearly care about food. Check it out for yourself!
