Anglesea Arms

At the end of a pretty little street off Goldhawk Road, you'll find this welcoming gastropub. On summer evenings, the front terrace soon fills with drinkers. Inside, the bar is traditional pub-cosy: a wood-panelled boozer with Union Jack cushions, the customary battered chesterfield, church pews, well-scratched tables and a mounted hog's head. Perhaps the latter is a nod to the piggy bar snacks chalked on the wall, along with pints of prawns, oysters, Neal's Yard cheeses and pasties.

All the gastropub boxes are ticked here: real ales (from Otter, plus regularly changing guest ales); fancy cocktails; and a dining room of exposed brickwork and an open kitchen. Any French bistro would be proud of the food: 'à la franglaise' as one item on the menu boasts. It's easy to see why affluent locals keep the pub busy.

Terrines, whole globe artichokes, soups and seasonal salads are typical starters. For mains, a grilled pork chop with a delightful fennel gratin showed the kitchen at its best. We were also keen on the mackerel with its summery sweetcorn and tomato salad. To finish, a vanilla-speckled buttermilk panna cotta was slick and well executed - as is the Anglesea in general.
