Following the closure of Wódka in July 2011, handsome Baltic - with its amber-shard chandelier and Hanseatic-style red brickwork against a cool Scandinavian white backdrop - is now the flag bearer for owner Jan Woroniecki's modern take on classic central and eastern European cuisine.
Our meal began with a telling-off from the waiter (for taking two pieces of the lovely rye bread instead of one), but friendly, though occasionally elusive, service soon resumed. It's hard to resist the stupendous vodka list; home-infused treats such as caraway vodka sit alongside many top-quality clear varieties.
A starter of subtly smoky black pudding, with sweetly caramelised onion and apple on a crisp potato pancake, was a dream combination with spiky horseradish vodka. A main course of meltingly tender shin of beef in a robustly herbed broth with just-cooked vegetables, delicate potato dumplings and nutty kasza seemed a rash order on a hot evening - but we had no regrets.
The cooling air-con did double service as an antidote to the occasionally intrusive bass thud from the bar and loud party chatter next door. A rather miserly pudding of soft cheese and sultana pancake was forgiven thanks to two must-try dessert vodkas: warmly spiced orange, and fragrant pear.

Even though the place looks like an old evangelical church, they manage to make it feel cozy. We were looked after a marvelous waiter, in general thee service was extremely good. The dishes were also refreshingly challenging (for someone not used to Eastern European diets) but not because of the ingredients: it is the combination of them that makes it exciting (if you like them of course). A lot of beetroot!! We ordered a £25 wine and then a top-up of the "house wine" which was actually better than the more expensive one, but overall, a very agreeable and enjoyable experience. Will go back one of these days, well done.
I would recommend this place. Good hearty eastern European grub. The eel (a starter) was wonderful and the Hungriuan lamb goulahs/stew was very nice. The service was very good and the restaurant has a nice ambience.
I went here a couple of weeks ago for my birthday and had the set Sunday menu. The food was delicious (bread with pickle as an appetiser, then herring fishcakes followed by lamb moussaka, finished with a cheeseboard, with a free cocktail to was it down) and, despite minimalist appearance, filling too. For what we paid (about £20 each before any additional drinks) this has to be the best restaurant in London! Right by Southwark station too, so no excuses...
