With its vintage posters, shelves of ketchup and King Curry, and a soundtrack ranging from world music to Bruce Springsteen, Banners is the place Hard Rock Café forgot to be. The menu (complete with local advertising, and a cover drawn by Louis, age 13) draws inspiration from Sri Lanka to the Caribbean, via good old Blighty. It is complemented by a list of specials, though our rather offhand waitress neglected to tell us what they were. Smoothies are popular; there's also a long list of cheapish cocktails plus decent Argentinian chardonnay by the glass. Huge plates of wild boar sausages, and curries with flatbreads, are carried swiftly through the dimly lit, cosy dining area. Eating at the bar out front is similarly cramped, and turnover is high. Jerk chicken burger didn't look appealing but tasted delicious, with beautifully tender slices of nicely spiced bird. But fried spoon bread was too oily an accompaniment for rich saltfish and ackee presented on a banana leaf. Still, we liked the ruddy-coloured, skin-on chips. Banners is not without faults, then, but it is perennially and justifiably popular.

Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; crayons; high chairs; toys ), Booking advisableHave been going to Banners on and off for 10 years and went again last night, booked a table for 7.30 , at that point I ordered from the specials board and was told 10 mins later they had run out, asked to choose something else which I was not happy about as there was nothing else on the specials board I would have liked, choose from the menu which I knew would not be as good, the waitress who served us was rude, food was presented in a cold place and the food which was supposed to be hot was barely hot, this was served with a salad which was not great, very disappointed with Banners, this is not the first time some dishes had run out early in the evening, but they still left it on the specials board, was this to make the menu look good or did they have it in the first place.
