Gastropub: Modern European

Dogs of any colour are welcome at this backstreet gastropub, as are drinkers, who might want to sample the lengthy wine list or one of the London-brewed real ales (Sambrook's Wandle and Twickenham Original). But the focus is on food, with the small main room packed with wooden tables and chairs. Prints and old metal signs clutter the walls. It's a charming spot, especially in the evening when the polished red ceiling, candles and handsome copper globe lights above the bar create a twinkling setting for some appealing food.

Although many starters are simple (half-pint of prawns with mayo, salty padrón peppers, whole globe artichoke), ingredients are top-quality and attention is paid to the details; plump Maldon rock oysters came with a shallot vinegar infused with coriander seeds. Full marks for the Scottish côte de boeuf (cooked rare, as requested), served with proper hand-cut fries and roasted tomatoes.

Flavours don't always shine through, however: a summery broad bean, pea and mint risotto was ultra-creamy, but lacked zing; and poached nectarines with amaretto biscuits and cream tasted more of the poaching wine than the fruit. Approachable, enthusiastic service and a contented hum from other diners made amends.

What a lovely pub, tucked away in a quiet residential street. The best thing about The Brown Dog, is being able to take my 2 boys with me for dinner (Barney & Malcolm, cocker spaniels). The atmosphere is warm and friendly, the staff and owner are very welcoming of their 2 & 4 legged friends. The food is wonderful, well cooked, lovely presentation. The only downside for me is the price. A little too expensive for a pub, the prices are more akin to a 5* restaurant. However, that aside, it really is a special place.

Just read a couple of the bad reviews and I had to put in my two cents. This is such a friendly and inviting pub. The decor is very well done and achieves an effortless class that so many gastro pubs strive for and fail to meet. The beers are not extensive, but what they have is very good, and i have never had a red wine that was not delicious. Highly recommended.

I had Sunday lunch there on Mothers Day with my family and we all had a fantastic time. Highly recommend it.

Have just read two unrecognisable reviews of the Brown Dog, and feel compelled to add my comnents. We have enjoyed Sunday lunch on many occasions with our two dogs and have always been greeted and made to feel very welcome. The food has always been superb and the staff consistent in their good service and kindness to the dogs. I can't imagine a better place to spend Sunday lunch after a walk in Richmond park. The dinners are equally worthy of praise, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend the Brown Dog!!!!!!

I had Sunday lunch The Brown Dog last week and had a fabulous experience! The roast beef is to die for and the real ales, although limited, are well kept and very tasty. The atmosphere was buzzing and the staff were friendly and attentive. I love it and will be back!

I am sorry, but I had sunday lunch here and it was an absolute disaster. Food was simply bad: I had seabass with potatoes, spinach and beurre blanc sauce... the fish was, in my opinion, not the freshest, the potatoes were burned and the spinach was soooo salty I could not eat it, all of it drowned in a sea of oily sauce. The staff, with the exception of a young man who was very kind, was incredibly rude to the extent you almost think it's a joke, honestly the attitude was unbearable. We almost had to apologise to them that the service was so slow and that we wanted a bit more bread....(actually the bread was the one good thing in this place). Obviously, I will never go back, unfortunate because I have a dog and it would have been great to go there as it is a dog friendly pub. A real Shame!

Just left the Brown Dog in Barnes & all I can say is quality zero, presentation zero & attitude a little underwhelming.
One guy apologized another threw nasty looks as if it was my fault the food was 3rd rate.
What a waste of money & a glorious sunny Sunday afternoon.
Be warned!
