C&R is the grown-up sister of Soho's C&R Café. The dining room features grey banquettes, pale wooden chairs and magnolia walls jazzed up with abstract artwork including one of a nude. A stained tablecloth got our meal off to an inauspicious start, and the prawn crackers, complimentary on our last visit, now cost £3.
We took time browsing the extensive menu, which doesn't restrict itself to Malaysia, drawing influences from China, Thailand and Vietnam. Singapore laksa is a popular choice here, but this time we decided to sample one of the chef's specials: fish fillet in batter. Sadly, the batter was clumpy and the dish was only just saved by the piquant chilli sauce. Sambal goreng telor - whole hard-boiled egg, quickly fried then mixed with a spicy sambal sauce - was equally ho-hum. Chendol (pandan pearls with coconut milk and gula melaka) brought our meal to a slapdash, excessively sweet and milky end.
We've enjoyed meals here in the past, but it seems both the food and service can be unreliable.
