There are three strands to Giancarlo and Katie Caldesi's London operation: an informal bar-caffè on the ground floor, a smarter restaurant upstairs, and a cookery school in the mews round the back - and that's without the cooking holidays in Giancarlo's native Tuscany. Downstairs is the most lively: a warmly lit space filled with the clatter of cutlery. Antipasti platters, pasta dishes and a limited selection of meat main courses are served here. Several of these plates recur on the menu of the starched, professionally staffed first-floor restaurant, which attracts an older, more buttoned-up class of customer. The kitchen's output is pretty hard to fault, especially when it turns out confident dishes like raw sea bass, with a brininess tempered by refreshing orange and fennel slivers. More muscular flavours are just as well-executed, such as a rich calf's liver with the yielding texture of butter, draped languidly over a mound of spinach. Pasta dishes bear the melt-in-the-mouth, home-style hallmark, so they can shine without much more adornment than a smattering of fresh fungi and cherry tomatoes. Capital dining then, even if the atmosphere is a little restrained upstairs.

This was the worst italian food I've ever had, such poor quality food and over priced! such a rip-off... around 80 pounds per person. Do Not Recommend it at all!!!

We went here yesterday with a party of six. We had to nearly shout a waiter over, we ordered our drinks, starters and mains at around 2pm. We got our drinks probably 30 mins later and eventually the starter and bread turned up, more like 3pm. We waited a whole hour to get our food by which I had to ask where it was. When our food finally arrived, it was fairly average, mine particularly looked as if it had been defrosted. small portions and rather expensive. I think I would get better from a ready meal from any supermarket. This place must be more of cafe than restaurant, as for a school - maybe their teaching people to turn the microwave on.

Think upsatairs restaurant is overrated & was disappointed by the quality of food considering the reviews and the fact that it runs a cookery school!! I ordered the linguine with toato, chilli & basil sauce without the fresh cream ....firstly the pasta was swimming in the sauce so that infact it was sauce with pasta..I was greatly dissappointed as the sauce was too salty , no chilli flavour and far too acidic and completely overpowered the pasta in quantity & taste. When I commented on the lack of chilli flavour to the waiter he stated that the sauce was the "usual " sauce but without a dollop of fresh cream, as I had requested. he then brought me an plate of chopped fresh red chilli to add to it myself. In fact there was absolutely no chilli in the sauce whatsoever. It was quite truely the worst pasta sauce I have ever had. I tried to eat the pasta on its own without the sauce which was difficult as it was literally swimming in the sauce. I left the meal uneaten. At no point did the waiter or waitress enquir if I was happy with the food..even when I left a full plate of food. As a result I left the restaurant with an upset stomache & taste in my mouth due to too much salt & over acidic tomato sauce. I would definitely never eat there again , neither would I recommend it. I felt cheated and ended up havingto pay £11.80 for a very substandard basic pasta dish which should have been simple , fresh & tasty and gained an upset stomache and a cut lip due to excessive salt & acidity.....and zero chilli. Overrated & definitely not worth the money....:(
