Tucked away off Clerkenwell Road, this Victorian boozer, with its wood-panelled interior and etched-glass windows, is endearingly shabby. It's also a proper pub, with outdoor tables at the front and as many drinkers as diners. Three real ales and assorted continental lagers are offered alongside a better-than-average wine list.
Standards seem to have slipped on the food front, however. The menu features several unusual dishes - some more appealing than others. We enjoyed the starter plate of rich, smoky sprats with horseradish and dill potato salad, but the idea of beetroot and hazelnut risotto didn't appeal. Heritage tomato salad (a starter) produced cold, largely flavourless chunks of tomato and an excess of rocket, while a main course sea trout steak was raw in the centre and the accompanying cold pearl barley too oily and studded with an absurd number of pickled garlic cloves (at least a dozen).
Portions are massive; Desperate Dan would have approved of the size of the steak bavette and chips (at least, both components were decently cooked). Best was a warm, soft chocolate tart with clotted cream. In all, however, fair pricing, a relaxed vibe and friendly, attentive service don't compensate for the slapdash approach of the kitchen.

This evening, I had a gorgeous roasted sea trout fillet with mash and sea vegetables and a pea puree sauce: they were really happy to give me mash rather than the ratte potatoes it was supposed to come with, which was great. I had a really unusual coffee rice pudding for dessert - again delicious, and we shared a salted caramel chocolate truffle which we couldn't resist trying. Everyone at the Coach is so friendly and welcoming, it's a brilliant place.
Great pub, a real pub with very good food, to my taste! I have eaten things I have dreamed of for a while and ham which really tasted of the meat not of salt or anything else..
A place which looks like a pub in "old" London if you know what I mean and food which people have forgotten of. But most important is that one can taste the passion and love, even in the bread. This place is an hour travel worth and every penny i spend.
I can't praise this place highly enough. The food was delicious. In particular the bread, charcuterie and the pork belly main course I had. The wine list is really interesting and a glass of La Gitana went very well with the charcuterie. The staff are very friendly and to cap it all I am ecstatic to report that there is no loud music so you can actually speak to your friends without shouting or asking them to speak up. What a godsend that is in London! Henry the head Chef was like his food: genuine, affable and delightful. I would not hesitate in coming back and feel I have discovered a rare little gem of a place. Good luck to the budding young star Henry and his staff!
