For south Londoners looking for a credible alternative to Chinatown, Dragon Castle is just the ticket. Styled in the manner of a banqueting restaurant - complete with stone dragons guarding the entrance, koi carp pond in the foyer and traditional lanterns in the tall windows - it offers an extensive selection of Cantonese-inspired high-street favourites (sweet and sour pork, egg fried rice, prawns with garlic and ginger) alongside lesser-seen delicacies such as cold sliced abalone.

The real draw, however, is the excellent-value dim sum. Highlights include properly prepared prawn and chive fun gwor, with fragrant innards shining through the wafer-thin steamed parcels (the pastry neither too sticky nor too weak: a mark of the kitchen's skill), and slippery char siu cheung fun, the classic rice-noodle roll stuffed in this case with smoky, honeyed pork morsels and served in a puddle of sweet soy-based sauce.

The experience is not without its downsides, though; our yam fritters were tough and greasy, the siu mai (steamed pork dumplings) a touch overcooked, and service varied from brisk and efficient one moment to absent-minded and indifferent the next - though with prices averaging £2.70 a plate, no one's complaining.

Very disappointed by the poor service. We called up the restaurant to ask about their opening times. They said last order was at 10:30. We specifically asked if we should come by 10 and reserve a table and they assured us that it won't be a problem and no booking was needed. When we turned up at 10 sharp, at first they said they had closed and when we explained that we had called and confirmed, they reluctantly agreed and gave us a table, but the staff was extremely ill mannered and trying to rush us through the order. We finally decided to leave without a meal. The manager came and tried to apologize but overall a very bad experience due to unprofessional staff.

we love this place & come every year for a big Sunday birthday dim sum.... dim sum is as good and varied as chinatown & comparatively affordable & the special birthday tune they do with the cake makes it very special! used to come for take-aways in the early days but live too far away now, so suppose we wouldn't have noticed if the dinner menu has dropped in quality.

I and a group friends have been coming to this restaurant on Sundays for the past year for Dim Sum lunch. The service was tremendous. The staff are very helpful and polite. The prices are reasonable compared to Chinatown. The food are good and tasty and fresh. We never have to wait for more than twenty minutes before the food arrive. One snag is that all the food ordered arrived within fifteen minutes. We were never hurried and plenty of time to socialise amongst ourselves within our table. A well deserved place in South London. We will be coming back for more. Keep up the good work.

Me and the family came here for dinner some time a go and the food and service was fantastic but tonight it was a totally different story! When we came for dinner we had to wait for 5 min before being greeted and seated considering the restaurant was empty!! Once seated we notice a few things that are different , the staff was not as nice as they use to be, the uniform wasn't as smart as before and pretty scruffy considering how the lay out of the restaurant is.
Then when we ordered the food it took about 30-40 min to arrive, when it did I arrive I thought it must be worth the wait, boy was I wrong, food was bland, everything taste sweet, not what it was suppose to taste like and I'm pretty sure they used a microwave to heat up some of the food, we quickly ate up and could hardly wait to get out!! The price was pretty steep too, I'm not even complaining about the price if it was decent food, but paying such a high price for food I can get from a Chinese takeaway is taking the mick. One things for sure is we will never be coming back , it's such a shame it turned out like this.

Couldn't wait to try this place...couldn't wait to get out once I had!

How can a place that looks this good, create such bland deep-fried rubbish? My first and last visit. Vastly over-priced too, with the standard of food you should be paying a third of the price. A tremendous disappointment.

We came here when this place first opened, when it had had excellent reviews from The Times, The Guardian, The Observer and it was brilliant. Interesting menu, varied, authentic. We have just been again, around 2 years later, and it was disgusting. Like a 1970s version of cantonese food.
Flavourless, bland menu which you could find in any bog standard chinese. Its not cheap either. It has gone to seed inside and we couldnt want to get out of there. It's sad that it has become like this.
I even told the waitress it was bad, she agreed and said she doesnt eat it! what further proof is needed.
If you want a great chinese in this area there is an excellent one, of the Xinjiang province, its called Silk Road and is on CamberwelL church st.

"The £11 king prawns in ginger sauce was surprisingly absent of ginger, save for one overpowering mouthful, and the truth is it's nothing special. All of this food is readily available to you at literally any local takeaway joint for a third of the price, and it's not really fair to be charging that much."

I've been a regular of the Dragon Castle for a few years now and it's true - it's a great Chinese restaurant. Or rather it was. I went there a few days ago and was shocked by the changes I found. For me, its signature was the ability to present familiar Chinese entrees and surprise with the subtle flavours you could now taste. It was was a revelation. But that seems to have gone. The first clue was the change in tableware and crockery, believe it or not. The next was the absence of the exquisite crispy chicken shreds in garlic from the house platter starter. For my main I went for an old favourite, Kung Po chicken, which previously was a delicately battered confection. Not any more - its now a pile of chewy chicken chunks in a feeble batter. Yuk! Flavour - wise, the sauces are still good but the spirit has gone out of the place. I used to be prepared to travel many miles to eat here, it was that good - if I want blandly average Chinese cuisine I can get it five minutes from my house - a lot cheaper, too. I fear this was my last visit to what was once the Elephant's finest restaurant - a real pity.

I love this restaurant. Great food, great location.
I read many reviews before eating here, all of which said that the Dim Sum was a great choice. It definitely lived up to it's expectations and I would recommend it a million times over.
