London's only family-run five-star hotel combines the old-style traditions of beef wellington, wooden panelling and a statue of the Queen Mum, with modern touches such as the 'not quite a trifle', striking Swarovski chandeliers and, on our visit, a pop-up beach bar in the garden.
The Goring hit the headlines in 2011 when it hosted the Middleton family before the royal wedding; you can enjoy pre-dinner cocktails in the drawing room where Kate had 'that dress' sewn on to her, or stand at the buzzing bar before slipping into the serene dining room.
Astute attention to detail characterises the place as grandiose yet funky: strips of beetroot jelly in one starter mimicked the coloured stripes running down the waiter's waistcoat, for example, and imperial columns jut up to the ceiling to match miniature crystal obelisks on each table.
Mushroom and truffle flavours permeated a main of roast Suffolk chicken. First-rate mashed potato, whipped into a satisfyingly sticky purée, had a faint aroma of leeks and butter. Roasted skate wing with black butter and miniature capers was a fine rendition too. We'd also recommend succumbing to the British cheese trolley.
