On a weekday lunchtime visit, this elegant restaurant flanked by industrial buildings was devoid of custom. At night, it's a rather different story. That's when legions of New Malden locals (many of them Korean families) and unwinding businessmen come here to indulge in the extensive menu of Korean classics, while ensconced in private rooms separated by sliding paper screens.
Comical chilli peppers on the menu denote the properly spicy dishes, such as the life-awakening kalbi (tender beef ribs in a 'cabbage leaf spicy broth'). Quiet, helpful waitresses brought out half a dozen small dishes of panch'an and namul: kimchi, seasoned courgettes, tteok (glutinous rice cakes) in a spicy-sweet sauce, marinated mushrooms, and an unorthodox though delicious potato salad and a pasta salad. The kimchi p'ajeon (pancake), perfectly crisp and golden, filled the length and width of the large, heavy plate on which it was served. Note the tanks of marine life (lobster, fish, crab) at the back of the room and order accordingly - seafood is a house speciality here. Mandu (dumplings) are also made on site, fresh for the evening service. You're unlikely to leave Hankook disappointed.
