The music industry is collapsing, brought to its knees by arrogance, mismanagement and a profound failure to deal with 21st-century challenges. But stepping through the doors of the Hard Rock Café, you'd think the old business was in the rudest of health. You'd also think it was 1983: the walls are lined with gold records (remember records?); videos by A Flock of Seagulls and Billy Joel play without irony on myriad TV screens; and glass-fronted cabinets proudly display such consecrated treasures as a bass guitar once cradled by Felix Pappalardi of Mountain. Only the prices bring you back to the future: £13.25 for a burger and chips might not seem too bad if you're on holiday and unfamiliar with the value of sterling, but the relative absence of British accents tells its own story. The food is exactly as you might expect: garish cocktails; chicken wings coated in orange sauce of indeterminate origin; mammoth plates of nachos; and burgers, which are actually pretty good. The relentlessly enthusiastic staff aren't shy about directing you to the shop over the road, where yet more rock relics sit alongside dazzlingly expensive T-shirts and other take-home ephemera.
