Hoxton Grill

Part of the hip Hoxton Hotel, the Grill has recently been taken over by the Soho House group. There are 'urban eaterie' touches in abundance here - a large, dimly lit dining area, exposed piping and brickwork, open kitchen and slick leather banquettes. The food is surprisingly good, and varied. Retro classics such as prawn cocktail, and sardines on toast, were highly successful, as were tasty dishes of coq au vin, and steak and chips with béarnaise sauce. Meat-lovers will adore the mixed grill, but those looking for something a little lighter should try the sandwiches and pasta dishes. Hefty desserts include chocolate fudge brownies with bourbon ice-cream, and vanilla cheesecake. The staff are charming and well informed (our waitress recommended a great bottle of Chilean Tiera Antica merlot), but, despite the lack of custom on our Saturday night visit, service was undeniably slow. Loud music and merriment from the adjoining bar meant that the restaurant was far too noisy, hence the Grill is a great option for a night out with friends, but not so appealing for a civilised meal with your parents.
