Malay for 'let's go eat', Jom Makan is a fast, fuss-free dining option well-suited to groups and for casual impromptu meals.Malaysian dishes are served efficiently in a large canteen-like room that's modern and airy but otherwise nondescript. Many dishes on the menu - satay, roti canai, nasi goreng - are common in Straits restaurants, but some, such as nasi ayam percik (grilled chicken with spicy coconut sauce) and mee bandung (spicy noodle soup), are more unusual. We enjoyed the mee goreng, chock-full of prawns and chicken, with yellow noodles that had spent just enough time in the wok to absorb the flavours of kecap and chilli while retaining their springiness.Nasi lemak was a textbook example of coconut rice with moist, fragrant beef rendang, and squid in a sticky, sweet sambal that didn't compromise on spiciness. Side dishes and desserts fared less well, with telur dadar (omelette) being rather overwhelmed by raw onion and chilli, and a lurid-green sago gula melaka containing little of the palm sugar that epitomises this dessert. Portions are adequate and prices modest. A good pre-theatre or post-museum choice.

I wish I could give the place less than a star! I used to come here in the past and the food was good. I hadn't been since May 2010 and what a disappointment it was tonight! What they called chicken Hainanese was basically breaded chicken with garlic mayo! As for my Nasi Lemak Ayam, the chicken was so undercooked I had to send it back to the kitchen. And instead of an apology, I just got two cooks grinning at me and clearly mocking me whilst I was eating their second attempt. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone!
I used to go here quite often and would always leave on high from eating such good food. Now I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy. The menu has completely changed and they have taken off a lot of their good dishes. I ordered beef satay as a starter and chicken rang dang curry for my main, there was more fat than beef on skewers and my chicken curry which was supposed to be flavorsome and creamy, was boiled chicken in a bowl full of oil. Even salt could not make the dish edible. I will not be returning there and it's a shame because they were once so good.
Hi there, I have never commented on Time Out but feel quite passionate about this. I'm malaysian and have eaten in malaysian restaurants all around London. Jom Makan is NOT a place I would recommend. It is NOT good food.
I am Malaysian and I recommend that people do not eat at Jom Makan if they want to eat Malaysian food. I ate at Westfield. Everything was disgusting. This restaurant would not survive in Malaysia. Nobody in Malaysia would eat the rubbish they are serving.
Do not waste your money eating here.
We went to the Jon Makan in Westfield yesterday. It was the second time we'd been here and enjoyed our first time a few months ago. My partner is a vegetarian and was pleased that there was a good choice of veggie options on the menu, and she order a vegetarian fried rice dish.
Her meal was placed in front of her. However, she (very fortunately!) noticed that there was a fish eye staring up at her from the very first fork full!
She called someone over to point it out and they apologised and took it away. She decided to not have another of the same as she wasn't satisfied that veggie food was cooked seperately to meat, so ended up with a plain rice, a side curry and a roti.
After our meal she asked the waitress how it could have happened, do they not cook vegetarian food seperately to meat. The waitress told her that they are all cooked together and that the veggie food is NOT cooked seperately to the meat.
Now we are of the opinion that vegetarian food should always be prepared and cooked seperately from meat so that it's not 'contaminated' (I should point out that I am not a meat-dodger!) and that if a dish as advertised as being vegetarian, it should be strictly that.
Personally I do not believe restaurants should be able to sell food as being 'vegetarian' when it's cooked alongside meat dishes, and anyone of the same opinion should give this place a wide berth.
I quite enjoyed my noodle dish, although it was nothing special, and the service was mixed - one of the girls was really friendly and another was pretty dismissive. They also charged us for the veggie dish with the fish eye until we asked them to check it again!
Very disappointing, and we won't be going back!
Was your reviewer on a: meow meow b: did not mind eating cat. c: went to another restaurant. As there can be no other explanations for this review! Dreadful food. Satay's that were bland and chewy see B! Mains that were dull and reheated with the only spice coming through being chilli. Do not go. Walk on to Chinatown. PS sack your reviewer.
