Gastropub: Modern European

Today, the stalwart Junction seems a typical quality gastropub, so it's easy to forget that on opening it was something of a trailblazer, showing dining pubs who'd strayed too far into restaurant territory the way back to quality ales. Staff were very friendly and enthuse about the beers (do browse the sizeable list of guest ales); we settled on two London options: Sambrook's Junction Ale and Tottenham's Redemption pale ale.

You can eat throughout the pub; maybe the modestly proportioned dining room with its claret-coloured walls, glass chandeliers and huge clear windows looking on to Fortess Road is a hair's breadth more elegant than the warm, wood-panelled bar. There's also a cheerful, if noisy, conservatory and attractive garden tables. The appealing Saturday brunch menu changes weekly, but typically proffers a choice of pancakes, eggs benedict and its variations, a cheeseburger, and a clever, satisfying twist on smoked haddock kedgeree with fried egg and mustard cream. Roasts are served all day on Sundays, though you can also dine à la carte at certain hours - in which case you'll find a can't-go-wrong mix of British and other European dishes.

Having booked over the phone just an hour in advance, we were impressed to see a high chair ready and waiting at the table for the baby. A big bottle of tap water arrived promptly too: proper hospitality.

This is a fantastic social experience not to be missed!, and one of the jewels in the crown of North London.
The staff here are friendly, relaxed and professional and the food always prepared and presented to perfection. They even allow you to enjoy linger and enjoy the relaxed ambiance without putting any pressure on you to feel it is time to move on.
Not to be missed, just try it!

One of my companions wanted a hot whiskey. We were there for the evening and spent a considerable amount of cash on rounds at the bar. However, after our third round, when I approached the bar to order another, the barman serving me got frustrated at having to make a hot whiskey, one that he had already made three times before. The manager then quite obnoxiously and proudly told me that this was the last hot whiskey we were allowed, on the grounds that he didn't have enough staff on that evening to make the drink whilst serving others. I told him that that was very bad form for bar service in London. He didn't care and was quite dismissive. There are plenty of lovely gastropubs in North London (the nearby Bull & Last being just one) that deserve your custom. With service so selfishly poor and so rude to regular paying customers, there is no reason to visit this one. I suppose it's fine when the service is good to you, but what if you happen to ask for something that the barman, quite irrationally, considers wrong and then proceeds to start an argument over it?
