Offering pretty much everything you want in a local restaurant, Market is difficult to find fault with, and, given its easy-going charm, you'd feel churlish to try. Service is friendly, efficient and wonderfully unobtrusive, hitting just the right note for a not-too-smart, not-too-casual destination that is both a treat and a bargain.
Decor is simple: banquettes where possible, a big vase of flowers, exposed brickwork and a small hatch into the rear kitchen. The chairs are a tad uncomfortable, but you'll still want to linger over the likes of pork belly with roast quince, and seared scallops with cauliflower purée and hazelnuts.
The daily-changing menu mixes classics of the modern British canon with proper traditional dishes (fish and chips, bacon collar, a Sunday roast). The pies have a deserved reputation, but we're particularly fond of the precision-grilled onglet and chips. Offal has proved a good choice too, with sautéed kidneys on toast being a highlight of our last visit.
Sticky toffee pudding is the hard-to-refuse dessert, but there's also own-made ice-creams, grilled figs in season, and cheese. Wrapping up this attractive package is a pleasingly unpretentious wine list featuring 20 or so each of red and white.

Tables outdoors ( 2, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 12 )I first came here in January and the food that my partner and I had was pretty good (evening a la carte). I can't remember what I had exactly but it was a stew of sorts and there wasn't much to fault, the wine was lovely and the service was pretty good.
However, I came here last week for lunch and although I understand that a tenner for two courses is good value, the food I was served was pitiful and not even worth a fiver. I was completely shocked at the standard of dishes I was served.
First up was a tomato and basil salad which was a bowl of three unripe, probably Spanish tomatoes with three tiny strips of basil and some slices of onion topped with olive oil. It was beyond bizarre...new season tomatoes are available in Britain at the moment and are tasting beautiful so it seemed strange that we were served such poor quality produce in strange presentation.
What came next was even more dreadful...a dish of pork belly with apple sauce and borlotti beans.
The pork belly was badly cooked and had bone in it, it tasted of nothing and was presented on a bed of tepid, hard kidney beans (unseasoned). I was shocked!
I might still go and check Market out again, but only from the a la carte...
Market used to be good but it's not anymore. The food is average and just about as good as you'd get in a pub. The Time Out "Editors" obviously didn't actually go there recently. Try harder guys and use your Oyster card for a change. Forget Market, there are better places in Camden
I absolutely agree with this updated review by TimeOut. I've been to Market numerous times over the last few years and have never been disappointed. The lunch menu is a real bargain and I adore their desserts. Really great place
My photographer took us here for lunch today (he has been many time even had the same table) I never knew this place existed, and I have eaten out many time in Camden, but it was great.
Before we all finished sitting down there was homemade bread and butter being put on the table.
The menu was great, very hard to choose, but I went for the Ontele with fries and alioi, medium rare, just the way I like it. The others had Roast Duck and Lemon Sole with chips, all was cooked well.
Then for dessert we had Sticky Toffee Pudding with Ice-Cream (yum, yum).
There was a set menu for starters and main at £10. But as we were being treated for lunch I never got to see the final bill!
It was busy so advance booking is recommended especially around lunch time. The service was quick and it was nice beable to see the cooks working in the kitchen. I would recommend this place.
Very nice and welcoming atmosphere, friendly staff but unfortunately food was only average. After reading all the great reviews I have expected something exceptional but was left a bit disappointed.
This restaurant is on my shortlist! Value for money. Being her about 5 times and never disappointed. Menu changing daily.
This is the best place to eat in Camden by far. I've been here numerous times, staff are friendly and the food is exceptional.
Three of us ate Lunch here on Saturday 12 June 2010. The menu was reassuringly short and simple and the prices very reasonable (at least for London) and the quality of the basic produce was truly excellent - oysters from Maldon and prawns were stand-outs as were the Belly Pork, Onglet and Veal, We pushed the boat out on wine and I thought the wine list seemed to carry higher than usual mark-ups but there were plenty of bottles under £20. Highly recommended though it was pretty quiet and the kitchen under no stress
what a load of rubish.
waited 1 hour between starter and main.
table next to us had nice chips but they gave us fries that you could not eat as were black.
terible place, bad owners, food we did eat was good. BUT
