It might be situated on a genteel backstreet two minutes' walk from the chi-chi King's Road, but the bar of this lovingly scuffed gastropub is as keen to populate itself with punk merchandise as it is with the polo-shirt brigade who frequent it. A promo cartoon for the Sex Pistols' 'Holidays in the Sun' above the bar advertises a 'cheap holiday in other people's misery', while a Clash 'Sandinista!' poster claims to be 'written with love, sealed with a kick'. Beers come from Battersea's Sambrook's Brewery.
The tiny dining area at the back opts for more self-consciously kitsch pub trappings. There's the kind of battered dark wooden furniture you'd expect to find in Hogwarts' dining hall, posters of dogs playing pool, a stuffed stag's head and cases of pin-mounted butterflies adorning the faded aquamarine wood panelling.
Food tends towards the hearty and meaty, although nothing impressed on our Sunday afternoon visit. A '32-day aged' beef sirloin arrived doused in a sticky, salty gravy, and the pleasantly runny yolk of an own-made scotch egg was let down by its watery meat casing. Service can verge on the distracted, even when not busy. Sad, as the Pig's Ear has wowed us in the past.
