A certain grandeur is guaranteed at Harvey Nichols' City venture, set in a former banking hall/. The space is all white, with the original Ionic columns soaring up to a wonderfully lofty ceiling, and spectacular towers of flowers on the bar and piano. Red leather sofas in the bar area, on one side, and brasserie tables on the other, still leave plenty of airy spaciousness.
In contrast, dining prices can be surprisingly un-lofty for the area, and the set menu counts as a City bargain (look out for limited-time frame special deals too). At its best, the food has an enjoyable flair.
From the set menu, macaroni with wilted spinach in a subtly creamy mushroom sauce made a lovely, light starter, though parma ham salad was more ordinary. Sauces are a strong point: a fragrantly herby, mushroomy sauce with the baked parmesan polenta and asparagus; or a beautifully deep-flavoured gravy with slow-cooked lamb. Best was a dessert: cinnamon-sugared churros to dunk in sumptuous hot chocolate sauce.
House wines are far above average, but there's also an ample fine-wine and cocktail list. Outstanding service, friendly and individual, adds a warm feeling to what could be a brittle space.
