Gastropub: Modern European

A short step from Regent's Park and Fitzrovia, this fine old pub retains plenty of classic Victorian features - grand wooden panelling, lofty leaded windows - as a backdrop to its modern metropolitan-gastropub identity. By contrast, a highlight of the menu is the long tapas list, which includes both excellent versions of Spanish favourites (creamy serrano ham croquettes, roasted peppers) and more pan-Mediterranean options, such as sweet potato and raisin couscous or bright, refreshing salads. Ingredients are consistently outstanding, and the range so broad that picking and choosing takes time. The shorter yet still imaginative Mod Euro main menu is also served in the bar, though to relax over a meal it's best to get a table in the cosy upstairs dining room, with original fireplace. Dishes on the regularly changing list neatly avoid established gastropub routines, as in black pudding ravioli with a piquillo pepper sauce, or another Spanish-based option, baked hake with clams. Drink is also a draw, with a wine list that's short enough to be easily readable but still presents plenty of ably selected quality labels at below-average prices, along with a good mix of cocktails and beers (cask and others).

I was very disappointed with the service and the food and will not be dining in this establishment again. We arrived for an early lunch on a weekday, and were the only people at the time our orders were taken - 45 minutes later we were still waiting for our food, which on arrival was cold, undercooked and the gravy with the wild boar sausages was bearly a thimble full - food was returned twice to the kitchen to try and get it right and in the end our lunch hour was over and some even left without eating. The service was appaulling - the staff were rude, and unhelpful when there were issues.

Disappointing. Poor service, poor food. Overpriced. Don't be tempted to eat here - you will be disappointed.

I have just returned with a party of 12 from lunch at the Queens Head and Artichoke. We booked in advance to arrive at 12:00 for lunch. We were the first diners to arrive and the last to be served at 1.30. Main course was terrible, most of us had lamb, with tabouleh and yoghurt dip. Tabouleh and dip seemed to have been just removed from the fridge and lamb which should have been just cooked was also cold and in some cases very underdone. Manager was very pleasant but in no way accepting that this was unacceptable. Staff were overworked and slow to prepare the table for menu choices and had to be asked to clear the table between courses. Prices were high even for central London and we would not return.

As the Time Out review was posting in Sept 2010, I suggest they go back again and try it out again as this place was not 4 stars by any means. The tapas were bland and boring, the artichoke was cold and tasteless and the chicken liver pate was green. Not impressed.
