Rebato's

Despite its location on a parade of Portuguese restaurants and shops, there's no doubt Rebato's is Spanish. As you step in from busy South Lambeth Road, you're immersed in a typical taverna: from long bar with tapas on display, via bullfighting posters, to leg of serrano in pride of place. Go no further if you're looking for a traditional tapas experience.

All the old favourites are here - albóndigas, patatas bravas, ensalada rusa, gambas al ajillo - and they're prepared with precision. Spanish beer, wine and sherry are on hand as accompaniments. Even during the day, this cosy, dimly lit oasis conjures up an atmosphere far removed from its location. If you're after old-school formality, however, step through to the main restaurant, with its white tablecloths, whitewashed walls, tiled flooring, well-spaced tables and lush foliage. There's even a dessert trolley.

Although you can enjoy mains in the bar, the restaurant is where to sit down and savour such dishes as seafood casserole, grilled sea bass with garlic and olive oil, or the signature roast suckling pig. A little piece of Spain in Vauxhall.
