At the quiet end of King Street, this largish restaurant with a basement bar is deservedly popular with locals, as well as many from further afield - it serves probably the best Vietnamese food in west London.
Dark wood tables, carved wooden artwork and low lighting comprise the simple decor; bamboo screens help break up the space to create more intimate seating. In summer, tables occupy an uncommonly wide and set-back stretch of pavement. The welcome is warm, and service both pleasant and informative.
Saigon Saigon's once lengthy menu has shrunk, but retains all the favourites. Starters include chargrilled quail marinated with honey, minced garlic and five spice, and crispy soft-shell crab with garlic, chilli and sea salt. Main courses of 'beef on fire' (baked sliced beef fillet in coconut juice and wine vinegar) and stewed king prawns in spicy caramel sauce, served in a clay pot, are among the most popular.
The beef and chicken pho are unmissably flavourful. Seafood is also worth trying, as are the 'special' steamboats (also with meat) of raw ingredients that diners cook themselves in a bowl of simmering stock.

Tables outdoors ( 4, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Available for hire ( bar )Great food but grumpy waiter, food took along time to come out but no apology or explanation given. Shame as the food is lovely and fresh but the service really let them down.
I am something of a newbie to Vietnamese cuisine, but as I am moving to Ho Chi Minh City I thought I'd better get acquainted with the food (and get in some chopstick practice too).
The food was DIVINE! Beef Pho... mmm! Everything was deliciously fresh and cooked to perfection! And the portions were substantial. My friend and I left feeling rather stuffed but not in a bad way.
I'm not accustomed to London dining prices so I can't say if it was very expensive in comparison to other London restaurants (I live in Nottingham) but I don't think we paid too much for the meal, as we did have three courses and two rounds of beer.
Also, the restaurant staff were lovely. Charming, helpful and very understanding of my lack of food experience. One man even corrected my appalling Vietnamese pronunciation.
If Time Out only concentrates on the food quality, service and location for their comments, there would be no comparison between Saigon Saigon with other cafe based restaurants in the East of London. I agree Saigon Saigon is a completely different league but having been there I can say it is with higher standard for food, service and atmosphere. **** is NOT the fair evaluation when compared with other ***** ones ?
