Hidden behind a discreet, slate-grey frontage, this polished tapas joint is an unexpected apparition to find on brash Goodge Street. Late afternoon, it's a low-key spot to perch at the bar for sherry and charcuterie; from 6pm, the pace quickens as the after-work set descends. Salt Yard buzzes at lunchtime and at night - though on our midweek visit, blaring disco tunes threatened to drown out the sociable hum, and didn't make for a restful supper.
The food, like the decor, tends towards sophistication, offering an artful, Spanish-Italian take on tapas. Although the menu frequently changes, confit of Old Spot pork is a constant, pairing beautifully tender, crackling-topped meat with a layer of rosemary-infused, near-dissolving cannellini beans. Jamón-studded manchego croquetas were also wonderful: miraculously light, but indulgently rich.
Other dishes, though, disappointed: rather bland slow-roasted lamb, rescued only by a punchy mojo verde; and a curiously cloying escabeche of mackerel, fennel and baby broad beans, its flavours lost in a surfeit of lemon and bay. With attention perhaps diverted to newer sister restaurant, the Opera Tavern, Salt Yard seems to have lost its way a little. We'll return to give the place another chance - though at a safe remove from those speakers.

Great service (the waitress let us try three different reds which were open at the bar in order to find one we truly liked), not overly expensive and I really couldn't fault it in any way. Can't wait to return!
