Sidi Maarouf - Sidi Maarouf © Martin Daly
With shisha smokers stationed two deep under the awning, diners must pass through a haze of smoke before reaching the more sparsely occupied restaurant. Under a silk-canopied ceiling, the interior, dominated by dark wood and leather club chairs, seems comparatively gloomy.
All the tempting North African staples are here at the Maroush chain's Moroccan outpost. Of these, the best bets are the briouats. For our vegetarian's sake, we asked the waiter to identify which of the mixed selection of crisp filo triangles and cylinders were meat-free. 'This one or this one is chicken or cheese,' he said cryptically, pointing at two indistinguishable parcels. Along with a lemony-fresh fattoush salad, these subtly seasoned pastries were the highlights. Starter plates including a so-so houmous were whipped away before we'd finished. Vegetable couscous and vegetable tagine were both dishwater dreary, the soggy veg not enhanced by any distinctive spicing. Poor value too.
Maybe you pay for the 'live entertainment' - a man behind a synthesiser pumping out insistent music, and at weekends there are belly dancers to make more of an event of it. The couscous certainly wasn't the attraction; some pastries and a pipe on the street might be preferable.

I loved it. Food is great and people are very friendly and attentive. I have to say though that if you are vegetarian, maybe you should not go there - Sidi is all about meat (falling off the bone). I liked decor as well. And the music bloke - oh, he is the part of the attaraction.
