What could be more British than roast beef and yorkshire pudding? Order Simpson's signature dish and you'll be treated to a dedicated carver at your table, resplendent in chef's whites and serving 28-day-aged Scottish rib from a trolley with a dome the size of St Paul's Cathedral.
If this feels like a throwback to another era, you won't be surprised to hear Simpson's hasn't changed its trolley-service fare since it switched from being a gentleman's chess club to an all-British restaurant in the mid 1800s.
We lapped up the tradition along with the various sauces that were served by a succession of waiters brandishing silver tureens. Lobster sauce over sea trout and crayfish tails, red wine sauce over stuffed loin of pork and creamed potatoes and, finally, madagascan vanilla custard poured over a distinctly British steamed treacle sponge.
The imposing wood-panelled dining room, tailcoat-attired staff and resident pianist all add to the sense of Britain's history. With strong literary links that include mentions in EM Forster's Howards End, the Sherlock Holmes stories, and custom from Charles Dickens and George Bernard Shaw, Simpson's-in-the-Strand is firmly written into the fabric of London's restaurant scene. Long may it continue.
