There's no shortage of Japanese restaurants in Soho, but So Japanese stands out for its fusion of European and Japanese ingredients, all presented on attractive ceramics and lacquerware.
In the airy ground-floor dining room, you can sit shoulder to shoulder with other diners at the long wooden sushi counter, or at tables. There's seating downstairs too, where you can watch the chefs at work, though it's a little dark.
For traditionalists, the sushi is excellent: perfectly cooked rice and achingly fresh fish. Tempura - light, crisp batter encasing sweet prawns, seafood or perfectly cooked veg - is another good option. If you fancy something more innovative, try the indulgent, pan-fried foie gras nigiri - popular, though the pan juices made our rice crumble slightly. Barbary duck, smoked in-house with Jack Daniel's wood chips, was silky textured, but too smoky.
The drinks menu shows some imagination, with saké and shochu cocktails complementing the wine and saké list. The somewhat nonchalant service was the only minor let-down in a quality meal.

We had the Foie gras niggiri as a starter and even though it tasted good the rice was falling apart completely so it was not very easy to eat.
We were quite surprised to be told that the main selection of tea was not available and that we only had two choices of tea. I can't imagine that it is that difficult to make sure to have enough tea for a Saturday night!
As for the main dish, do not pick the grilled scallops! It was not cooked properly; almost raw in the middle and burnt on top. There was also barely any sauce but a lot of water which make me think that it was frozen ones! (and which would explain the lack of taste!)
I had sushis rolls that were good but not that extra fresh or tasty.
Maybe you will appreciate more this restaurant after a few sakes - as maybe a bit of alcohol will make you forget how your meal really taste...
Overall, descent restaurant but quite pricey compared to the quality of the food.
We recently visited this excellent little restaurant, even though it's slightly hard to find - hidden away behind Regent Street and Shaftsbury Avenue. The service was really good and the food was even better - especially the Mackerel Sushi. On top of this SO also has a fine selection of saki and wines. Thoroughly recommended.
