Reminiscent of a wine bar, with its bottle-lined walls and wood panelling, Soho Japan serves the local office community well with classic Japanese cooking (sushi, tempura, sumiyaki grilled dishes and so on), as well as a reasonable list of wines, sakés and beers.
At lunch there are also set meals and bento boxes. Teriyaki chicken was moist in the middle with satisfyingly crunchy skin, while salt-grilled mackerel and salmon was equally good - despite the salmon's over-charred skin. A crab and avocado salad packed with sweet crabmeat and a sprinkling of flying fish roe was also a success.
Interestingly, when it came to dessert, our waiter warned us off that day's special (green tea cheesecake) as he said it wasn't up to par. He suggested one of their own-made ices instead. Options included black or white sesame ice-cream, as well as yuzu sorbet, which we plumped for: it tasted more of tropical fruit than the Japanese citrus fruit we'd been expecting, but was nonetheless enjoyable.
Thanks to its quality food, attentive service and location near Oxford Circus, Soho Japan is a flexible choice - good for a working lunch, post-shopping treat or leisurely dinner.
