With its swish setting inside Holland Park, the Belvedere is the kind of restaurant you want to dress up for, whether or not you're off to the opera afterwards. It's easy to imagine yourself in an art deco hotel lounge, with gilt mirrors, oriental-patterned wallpapers and the piano tinkling away as you enter the room; all that's missing is Hercule Poirot. There are playful touches, with bright artwork like Warhol's Marilyn Monroe to dilute the sense that you're in a period piece.
Likewise, the menu features some slightly incongruous items, with fish and chips sitting alongside the Franco-Italian classics. There's also a selection of Sunday roasts - with jus, not gravy. Back on track, the wine list places formidable French vintages to the fore. Staying more or less across the Channel, a chicory salad combined two colours of the bitter leaf, with the right balance of roquefort, pears and walnuts. Calf's liver was nicely charred, and paired with an intense sauce diable, but tuna steak with aubergine caviar had a slightly mushy texture and was under-seasoned. Oddly, the waiters offer a grinding of black pepper over every dish, Pizza Express-style, but they serve their white-haired and well-to-do clientele with smooth efficiency.

Tables outdoors ( 8, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking essential, Separate room for parties ( seats 20 ), Available for hireFood adaquate and some things very good. Service appalling. Current manager/headwaiter arrogant, rude and everything you do not want when going out for a meal. Having had many very good meals here in the past under a different regime (the last formerly from the old Tante Claire), I will not eat there again. If you don't mind being treated like an ignorant tourist or person who has no experience or knowledge of what a good dining is, this place will suffice. When I am told that the present management changes, I will instantly be back. P M White should be ashamed (or perhaps he doesn't know?)
