The Terrace - © Tom Baker
Sheltered amid greenery in the middle of Lincoln's Inn Fields, the Terrace is an unexpected hideaway, housed in a discreet single-storey building with terrace behind. Inside, decoration is pleasantly low-key; outside, tables and multicoloured chairs are chic and plastic.
Food comes with a Caribbean twist, visible in summery dishes such as jerk chicken caesar salad or lobster and mango salad. A starter of smoked chicken and mozzarella salad came with a ring of lovely green olive oil flecked with spots of balsamic: a perfect, light combination. Grilled halloumi with leaves was another success: a thick, succulent slab of mild golden cheese with a subtle dressing, capers adding bite.
To follow, mackerel and squid with green salad was also enjoyable, precisely cooked and with fresh, simple flavours. Linguine with parmesan, however, was quite bland; more cheese in the creamy sauce would have added some punch.
Portions aren't large, so we couldn't resist pudding: a luxurious eton mess, with cream, strawberries and chewy chunks of meringue. The Terrace's cheapest white wine, Le Lesc vin de pays du Gers from Gascony (£15.50), is light yet full of flavour, setting the tone well for our meal.
