Bringing a dash of West End glamour to Clapham North, Tsunami has become a south London mini-destination. From Battersea to Balham, the inhabitants of SW postcodes flock here for upmarket modern Japanese, delivered in dark, swanky surroundings.

Smartly dressed staff bustle around the low-lit, open-plan room, serving WAG favourites (yellowtail sashimi with jalapeño, miso black cod) alongside more everyday options (warm udon noodles, chicken with a wasabi sauce).

Curls of tender salt-and-pepper squid came delicately battered and suspended in an attractive paper cone; six soft-shell crab maki, the limbs hoiked in the air, also combined flavour, texture and visual appeal. Only the salmon teriyaki, with its stingy proportions and insipid marinade, proved a let-down.

On weekend evenings, the tempo goes up several notches, with the small, amber-topped cocktail bar becoming a magnet for dating couples and groups of young professionals, all eager to indulge in a lychee martini or two.

A word of warning, though: at these times, the overspill of noise into the dining room can become well-nigh unbearable. Come summer, the dozen or so alfresco tables, looking on to the railway arches, make a peaceful alternative.

A gorgeous restaurant with incredible food, unsurpassed cocktails and wonderful service. We visited Tsunami on our anniversary and it was a very special evening. The staff automatically asked to put our bouquet in water and displayed them for us. They were extremely attentive, very polite and knowledgable about the food and the drinks.

The food was delicious. Teriyaki salmon was to die for, along with tempura vegetables, a delicious side of noodles, battered squid with a wonderfully zesty japanese mayo with green chillies and a heavenly sticky toffee pudding. It was all exquisitely presented. The cocktails - a umami and a strawberry martini - smelled like perfume - beautifully fragrant.

A dream of an evening for us and quite the find.

It was also very easy to get to and to find.

Best japanese restaurant in London.
We went there to celebrate a special occasion and the food and service did the trick.
Best meal we have had in a long time. The cod dish was outstanding!!
We will return again soon and will recommend to everyone we know.
Thanks for a lovely evening

positives: good atmosphere, service and food presentation

negatives: crammed seating, overpriced, small portions, food was drowned in sauce which was too salty and too strongly flavoured to taste what you were eating. The much hyped "black cod" tasted artificial and stale. The scallop was drowned in an unpleasant sour cheese sauce and served on a bed of pure salt which can be easily mistaken for mashed potato in the dim lighting!

Left feeling disappointed, ripped off and still hungry.
