We're big fans of this small wine bar and shop, and we're not alone. The no-bookings policy in the evening means it's first come, first served, and such is Vinoteca's reputation for interesting wine and food at very acceptable prices, there's always a queue. Go at lunch if you want a guaranteed seat.
The 25 wines by the glass change weekly, but typically traverse the globe from Austria (a Kurt Angerer 2009 Kamptal grüner veltliner) to Australia (a 2008 shiraz cabernet from One Chain Vineyards). Each dish comes with a wine suggestion. Staff are happy to answer any questions, but wear their knowledge lightly.
This lack of pretension combines with excellent dishes (rabbit and pork rillettes; pan-fried hake with broad beans, peas, fregola pasta and Amalfi lemon; or a selection of Spanish cured meats with almonds and olives) to create a winning formula. The punchily flavoured food is produced in full view from a tiny kitchen next to an equally diminutive bar, where there are a few perching stools for those waiting for tables.

There has been a real deterioration in service. It has always been a bit slow but now they won't let you just have a drink after 6pm. Is it a wine bar or a restaurant? I've been going regulalry for more than a year but no more.
Having enjoyed eating here in the past, I don't think I'll be going any more. An enjoyable evening is about more than good food and wine: it also requires friendly efficient staff to create a welcoming atmosphere. These qualities have really deteriorated at Vinoteca. The junior wait staff are fine but the managers have become arrogant, rude and unwelcoming, which takes the pleasure out of any experience. A real shame.
