Expect to suffer wallpaper envy as you enter the ground-floor bar and then head down to this cabaret-cum-burlesque club, located, rather bizarrely, not far from Chancery Lane tube in the heart of the City.

Those daring enough to descend into the basement can expect to enjoy some of the best cabaret talent in town from tables set beneath absinthe-inspired vines. Afternoon Tease combines burlesque with high tea most Saturday afternoons; other events look back as far as the Jazz Age for inspiration.

The food's pricey - fettuccine with spinach and sun-dried tomatoes for £16.50 seems a little steep - but the cocktails, both traditional and modern, are more reasonable at around £8 apiece.

The expensive food was dire; the entertainment poor. Ivy Page had a great voice but other acts (bar one, ginger blush) were simply girls taking their clothes off - with none of the comedy, caricature, parody or tongue-in-cheek that you would expect from a burlesque show. The place was only half-full and the atmosphere uncomfortable - I can only assume that others in the audience were expecting something more than a strip show and left feeling awkward by most of the acts. Thoroughly disappointing, especially for the expensive price - we paid £150 for 2 cocktails, appalling 3-course meal, and the cheapest bottle of wine on the menu.

My boyfriend took me to Volupte for my birthday. It was quite a deception. Food is very poor for the price. The show was Ivy Page, quite boring. We were very surprised when the girls started taking their clothes off! They should really prevent about this as not everyone feels comfortable in this situation. We expected some kind of inteligent comedy, not nudity.
We paid £135
