The Clerkenwell Kitchen
While ordering at the bar can add unwelcome faff to dining out, the system works well enough here, ensuring service moves swiftly for the glut of local workers that fill the sleek white and pine space from midday.
The opening hours - weekdays only, until 5pm - means the place is geared toward this lunchtime clientele, and a daily changing menu features quick-to-serve, seasonal dishes that use mainly organic ingredients.
Hot mains range from the supremely simple (fettuccine with Scottish girolles) via familiar comfort classics (steak and kidney pie) to brasserie-style dishes, such a perfectly flaky fillet of pollack on a too-small bed of swiss chard and a filling sea of lentils. A brief selection of doorstop sandwiches and own-made cakes are well executed, and the coffee is excellent.
Food is reliable and the atmosphere calm and friendly, making Clerkenwell Kitchen a prime spot for informal business meetings or a smart lunchtime treat.

Nice food but quite poor service - slow and pretty rude sometimes.
